Dear Josb,
A supply-chain crisis, building for years, is now a full-scale emergency due to the double whammy of the Covid-19 pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
Artificial intelligence-powered technology created by Trellis predicts the yield, quality, timing and cost of agricultural produce, commodities and raw ingredients. The platform enables food and beverage manufacturers to optimize their supply chain, increasing efficiency and revenues while cutting waste and emissions. OurCrowd is investing in Trellis. The details in this email are based on information received from, and verified solely by, the company.
The problem
Extreme climate events, exacerbated by disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, have created a supply-chain emergency leading to global shortages and sharply rising costs of both raw produce and consumer foods.
Even before the events of the past two years, pressure from a fast-growing global population was placing extreme pressure on food supplies and distribution networks, driving up prices and increasing food insecurity.
Weather and other variables affecting agriculture are notoriously difficult to predict. Supply chains have become increasingly digital, but inefficiencies persist. Existing enterprise software is not tailor made for agriculture, and bespoke solutions from Oracle, SAP and Palantir are too expensive for small and medium-sized food and beverage producers.
Experts forecast a 40% decline in agriculture yield due to weather events, leading to a $400B food loss across the US supply chain and a $100B increase in the globe cost of grain. Unilever, for example, estimates costs of $330M directly connected to climate change. PepsiCo aims to reduce waste by 50% across its direct operations by 2025. Innovation is urgently required in the complex $30B global AgriTech market.
The solution
Trellis has created an AI-powered platform that gives food producers unprecedented predictions of crops, weather, yields, water supply and other vital information, based on cognitive learning from multiple data points.
Trellis offers a deep competitive edge by integrating climate inferences into global manufacturing and sales through the use of data on climate, environment and manufacturing combined with market, price and consumer trends. The platform dynamically predicts how climate and weather will affect harvest yield, quality, timing and unit cost. Customers can leverage predictions to streamline supply-chain operations.
Trellis enables manufacturers to optimize the entire length of their supply chain and distribution system from field to shop counter, increasing efficiency throughout the process and reducing costs, waste and emissions.
The platform's predictive AI and cognitive learning predicts supply and demand behavior, enabling users to resolve inefficiencies, and deliver opportunities to optimize food production, productivity and profitability. The result is an end-to-end, AI-powered, risk intelligence platform for the global food and beverage value chain that allows users to optimize financial risk and opportunities for growth.
The customers
Trellis has multi-year agreements with three of the world's top wineries: Treasury Wine Estates, Santa Rita, and Pernod Ricard. Another customer is Prodalim, one of the world's biggest juice producers. Users report a 5% increase in profits and a 50% cut in emissions.
"Trellis gives our team one source of truth – a holistic, accurate view of all of our business, field and operational data," says Matt Johnson, VP winemaking operations at Treasury Wine Estates. "We've been able to quickly onboard Trellis to make well-informed decisions that have created critical efficiencies across our operations."
The company's focus is on the wine, juice, and processed foods industries, targeting mid to large-size customers.
The traction
The company's multi-year agreements each yield hundreds of thousands of dollars in annually recurring revenues (ARR) based on its SaaS business model.
Based on its existing roster of four major customers and a robust pipeline, the company forecasts 120% YOY ARR growth to $1.5M at the end of 2022, and 260% YOY growth to $5.3M at the end of 2023.

The Trellis solution
Trellis provides food manufacturers with an enterprise SaaS/Cloud solution that solves food supply chain optimization problems. By integrating and enriching data from various sources across the supply chain, Trellis consolidates siloed data from farming, planning agricultural production, harvesting, handling, storage, food processing, market demand and consumption. Trellis claims it can give accurate predictions about the biggest pain points in the supply chain for food companies.
Trellis has collected millions of historical data points which helps give crucial intelligence, including historical and real-time data from weather patterns, satellites, supply chain networks, yields, timing, prices, irrigation, fertilization, field samples, factory production, and more.
