Dear Josb,
Synthetic media, using AI to create images, videos, and sounds, is transforming many fields from entertainment and the arts to business and education.
OurCrowd is reinvesting in D-ID, a Y-Combinator graduate specializing in video reenactment technology using AI and deep learning. The details in this email are based on information received from, and verified solely by, the company.
Viral Product
Live Portrait, D-ID's still photo animation product, is the technology behind MyHeritage's Deep Nostalgia app. Jimmy Kimmel, Ian McKellan, and Jake Tapper were among the celebrities whose enthusiasm transformed Deep Nostalgia into a global viral sensation. The multimillion-dollar deal with MyHeritage is providing the company with invaluable publicity.
D-ID has two additional products available. Speaking Portrait can automatically create talking-head videos from written text. Face Lit allows users to digitally change the emotional expressions of images.
The Company
The company is currently staffing a new Metaverse division to develop products for the emerging Metaverse that can include not only faces but full bodies capable of interacting with the digital environment.
Professor Lior Wolf of the School of Computer Science at Tel Aviv University recently joined the team. Prof. Wolf is the former lead research scientist at Facebook AI Research and a world-renowned expert in deep-learning full body reenactment.
The company has partnerships with AR/VR specialists The Glimpse Group and CGI experts The Artery.
Revenue Growth
D-ID has $3M revenue contracted for 2022. The company projects $9M in revenue this year with $12.4M annual contract value, up from $1.3M revenue in 2021.
D-ID has 22 new deals and 7 upsells with existing customers in 2021, including Josh (India's TikTok), Mondelēz, and Warner Bros.

The D-ID Solution
D-ID's Live Portrait product is powered by the company's patented Reenactment technology which was developed in-house. Reenactment uses generative deep neural networks, GANs, and hundreds of millions of frames datasets, and can work faster than real time, making it suitable for livestream and video conferences.
Face Lit uses the technology behind Live Portrait, but in a different way, to be able to change facial expressions in photos.
Speaking Portrait provides text or speech to video capabilities, without needing any video driver. The system is trained on real actors. It can take materials such as articles or corporate marketing materials and turn them into videos, at scale, without needing costly productions, studios, or actors.
